My shower is leaking, how do I fix it?

Modern shower stall

Leaking showers are a common problem and may be due to a number of reasons, we would need to inspect the shower to determine the problem.

Fixing a leaking shower depends on the source of the leak. Here are some common causes and steps to address them:

1. Leaking Showerhead

  • Cause: Loose connections or worn-out washers.
  • Fix:
    1. Turn off the water supply.
    2. Unscrew the showerhead from the pipe.
    3. Check the washer inside the showerhead or pipe connection. Replace it if worn out.
    4. Reattach the showerhead and tighten it securely.
    5. Turn the water back on and check for leaks.

2. Leaking Shower Faucet (Handle)

  • Cause: Worn-out cartridge, O-rings, or seals.
  • Fix:
    1. Turn off the water supply.
    2. Remove the handle (you may need a screwdriver or Allen key).
    3. Use a wrench to remove the valve stem or cartridge.
    4. Inspect the O-rings and seals for damage. Replace them if necessary.
    5. Reassemble the faucet and turn the water back on.

3. Leaking Shower Drain

  • Cause: Damaged drain seal or loose connections.
  • Fix:
    1. Remove the drain cover.
    2. Check the seal around the drain. If it’s cracked or worn, replace it.
    3. Tighten the drain assembly with a wrench if it’s loose.
    4. Reinstall the drain cover and test for leaks.

4. Leaking Shower Pan or Tiles

  • Cause: Cracked tiles, damaged grout, or a faulty shower pan.
  • Fix:
    1. Inspect the tiles and grout for cracks or gaps.
    2. Re-grout or replace damaged tiles.
    3. If the shower pan is cracked, it may need to be replaced by a professional.

5. Leaking Pipe Behind the Wall

  • Cause: Damaged or corroded pipes.
  • Fix:
    1. If you suspect a hidden leak, turn off the water supply and call a plumber.
    2. They may need to cut into the wall to repair or replace the pipe.

Tools You Might Need:

  • Adjustable wrench
  • Screwdriver or Allen key
  • Replacement washers, O-rings, or seals
  • Plumber’s tape (for threading)
  • Grout or tile repair kit (if applicable)

When to Call a Professional:

  • If the leak persists after DIY fixes.
  • If the leak is behind the wall or in the plumbing system.
  • If you’re unsure about the source of the leak.

Always turn off the water supply before attempting any repairs to avoid further damage or flooding. If you’re not confident in your DIY skills, it’s best to consult a professional plumber.
